How to spot a rolled-back odometer

  • A drop between readings. A later reading lower than an earlier one is the main rollback sign.
  • Wear that does not match. A worn steering wheel, pedals, buttons and seat bolster with low mileage.
  • US auction mileage. For an imported car the current mileage must be higher than at the lot sale date.
  • Service records. Dates and mileage in the service book or dealer history should grow steadily.
  • Control-unit diagnostics. Engine, gearbox and ABS units store their own mileage — a service station reads it.
  • A “round” or very low mileage. Without documents such a value is unconfirmed — worth a closer look.
